"The Barton Inn is a substantial square-set building in the village of East-the-Water, over the bridge from Bideford (the bridge over the River Torridge, not the A39 bridge). Dating from the early part of the 18th century, it was formerly a farmhouse, and when Lynn Nigh bought the property in April 2004 it was not in the best of repair. Lynn has 25 years' experience in the business, so there was little doubt that she could put the place back on the map, and indeed it took her and her son Ben very little time to start to realise its potential. Two real ales (bass and a regularly rotating guest) and a selection of keg beers are served in the bar, where eyecatching features include a massive stone wall, stone-clad bar counter and a stone hearth. Lynn does the cooking, and her menus stick mainly to tried and tested favourites that go down very well with the regular customers from the area and with the many tourists who flock to this part of the world. Steaks, gammon, steak & kidney pie, chilli and lasagne are all very popular, and on Sunday (booking essential) lunch provides a choice between traditional roasts and sandwiches/baguettes. "
