Devon Dartmoor Walking, South West Coast Path, Walking Devon UK

Devon is simply a walker's paradise, with numerous marked walkways in the interior, and the longest trail in Britain running around it's coastline - the South West Coast Path.

Walk around beautiful Dartmoor National Park on the circular Dartmoor Way, take in market towns and woodland valleys along the Tarka Trail which hooks up with the South West Coast Path on the North Devon Coast, or explore some of Devon's many smaller historic trails such as the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail or the Erme-Plym Trail. Walk around Devon's many estuaries or simply dip into sections of the South West Coast Path. Many guided walks are offered via Tourist Information Centres. Okehampton is a particularly good Dartmoor base, as many of Devon's marked walkways pass through Okehampton. Devon Coast Walking

The Devon coastline offers some of the most stunning coastal walking in Britain, with a mix of jagged cliffs, red sandstone on the Jurassic Coast, long sandy blue flag surfing beaches at Woolacombe and Croyde to the North, back to jagged cliffs at Ilfracombe, and gentle coastal walking where estuaries hit the coast at Exmouth and Salcombe. The great news for walkers is that there is one marked Devon path which takes in all of these delights - The South West Coast Path National Trail (see weblink to the right).

The South West Coast Path is Britains longest marked trail, at over 600 miles/960km, with the Devon stretch of the South West Coast Path reaching 90 miles/144km in the north and 115 miles/185km in South Devon. Beautiful, diverse coastal scenery awaits!

The full length of the South West Coast Path runs from Minehead on the edge of Exmoor National Park all the way round the South West Coast to Poole Harbour in Somerset. It's easy to dip in and out of this coastal path, taking in small stretches and it passes through many Devon seaside holiday hotspots like Torquay, Ilfracombe, Dawlish, Sidmouth and historic Plymouth, as well as many picturesque villages like Lynton, Combe Martin, and Clovelly. All offer a choice of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses. Hook into some of the many guided walks offered via tourist information centres.

Be amazed at Devon's coastline and get ya walking boots on!!

Dartmoor Devon Walking

The Dartmoor Way is a superb circular walkway, working it's way round the outskirts of the park for 90 miles, and taking the walker through some of Dartmoor's most beautiful villages, and fascinating sites. It's a marked walkway that can easily be dipped into, if you're looking for less strenuous walking, or there is a separate route especially for cyclists. Okehampton, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Manaton, Lydford and Princetown all feature on this Dartmoor circular walkway.

The 90 mile long Dartmoor Way which skits round the outside of Dartmoor National Park is perhaps the most popular. Two Moors Way weaves it's way through the centre of Dartmoor National Park, from Ivybridge up past Widecombe in the Moor, Drewsteignton and then onwards towards Exmoor National Park all the way to beautiful Lynmouth on the North coast of Devon. The Two Moors Way is long distance walking at it's best, 102 miles of it to be precise and a week is often recommended as the time period to designate to walking it!

Various long distance trails push out from Okehampton, North Dartmoor into other beautiful parts of Devon. You can really mix and match your walkways, as they're all connected, and touch on differently themed walking territory from open moorland, to pastoral/rural Devon to historic and literary themes along the Tarka the Otter and castles/celtic/stone and iron age lines.

The Tarka Trail

Hop onto the Tarka Trail at Okehampton which weaves up through English Civil War hotspot Great Torrington. This walkway was influenced by the children's favourite novel 'Tarka the Otter', which contained real places covered on the trail which stretches 180 miles/290 km in a figure of eight shape. The Tarka Trail takes in a little of the north Dartmoor National Park, but it's figure of eight covers mostly wooded river valles, peaceful Devon countryside and dramatic parts of the North Devon Coast. This walkway is particularly well marked, and easy to dip in an out of either with short sections undertaken, or circular sections like the top end which weaves from Barnstaple round the famous surfing North coast of Devon through Croyde, Ilfracombe, and the soul stirring beauty of Combe Martin and Lynton, back down through Exmoor. The Tarka Trail takes in the lot - Dartmoor and rugged moorland, dramatic North Devon coastline, age old Devon towns like Barnstaple, and the wooded pastoral beauty of mid-Devon around Great Torrington. Want walking variety - choose the Tarka Trail!
