Yelverton Golf, Buckland Abbey Home of Sir Francis Drake, Dartmoor, Devon

Yelverton to the west of Dartmoor National Park is a well equipped base perfect for both walking, golf and historic sight-seeing in Dartmoor. Yelverton has a superb golf course, and is conveniently placed right on the Dartmoor Way, so the perfect stop off point.

Also, to the west of Yelverton is the 700 year old building, Buckland Abbey, once the home of both Sir Francis Drake and Grenville. Inside there's a spectacular 16th century great hall. It's your chance to really explore the day to day life of wealthy Elizabethan England.

Buckland Abbey, Home of Sir Francis Drake

Although most associated with Sir Francis Drake, Buckland Abbey was first errected and settled by the Cistercian Monks. The house is approximately 700 years old, and there remains some signs of the Cistercians, for example in the restored Old Barn and in the architectural style of the house. After dissolution the Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Grenville by Henry VIII for good services rendered.

The first Sir Richard Grenville (it gets confusing as there are a few Richard Grenvilles!) had Buckland Abbey in mind for his son, but unfortunately he drowned after the Mary Rose was attacked. It then passed to the original Grenville's grandson who wasn't there for long, and evenutally sold it to Sir Francis Drake, who after Spanish Armada exploits was pretty wealthy and had about 40 such homes across Britain. Marks of ownership by Drake, a rich seafarer can be seen throughout the house, as well as numerous exhibition including changing ones such as the recent quilting and embroidery exhbition with a seaBritain theme.

Buckland Abbey is set in the beautiful Tavy Valley, west of Dartmoor. Fascinating Elizabethan gardens surround Sir Francis Drake's old home, plus there are many amenities on-site, guaranteeing a good fun-packed family day out. Try your hand at a bit of butter making, take walks in the surround gardens and Tavy Valley. Refreshments and an Abbey shop are on-site, and various events run throughout the year!
